Volunteer opportunity description

Interested in supporting refugee youth in Chicago? Come help Heartland staff assist refugee kids K-12 with their homework on Mondays in West Ridge or Wednesdays in northern Rodgers Park. Our afterschool program aims to offer our youngest participants a safe and welcoming place to work on challenging homework assignments, while also engaging in fun activities with volunteers and other participants! No experience or expertise in subject matter is required. Our participants are English language learners, so we are looking for patient and passionate individuals who want to make a difference in refugee youth lives through spending time with them working on basic homework assignments and other developmental activities designed for language acquisition.

After School Program will be weekly starting September 25th until Winter Break on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00pm-6:00pm. The Monday location will be in West Ridge, while the Wednesday locations will be in northern Rodgers Park. We are asking volunteers to commit to at least one location on a weekly basis. Consistency is very important to our youth in forming relationships and a safe space.

  • Attend orientation September 22nd.

  • Pass an online criminal history background check. The cost is $18.95 and must be covered by the volunteer.

  • Commit to volunteering at least once per week (outside of vacation/illness) for at least four months (or one semester).
